Zaido is supposed to be a continuation of Shaider. However instead of having just one protagonist GMA 7, the network producer, introduces us to three handsome young men who are the grandchildren of the original hero.
This Filipino-made sentai debuted tonight and of course being a big fan of the Shaider TV series I can’t help but write a review for Zaido. Before you continue however might I warn you that most of what you’ll read is not exactly quite enticing enough to make you like it. May I point out that this maybe because I can’t help but compare Zaido to Shaider. Sorry, a fan is a fan. But I did like some parts. 
Where shall I start? I supposed the summary would be best but their character names escapes me so I’ll pass this one and go straight to a commentary. To make it perfectly clear I decided to categorize my comments into two: What I hate and What I like. Well here goes…
A. What I hate.
- Zaido’s set and costume is ugly. Everything looks like foam with paint on it. I bet stickers would look better than ugly drawn backdrops and design. Twenty years worth of technological advancement and the Shaider set still looks more realistic and stylish to me than that of now. As for the costumes those not clearly made of clothe makes people look bloated and totally fake. (The main reason I hated watching the Richard Guttierez’s fake abs on Captain Barbel)
- I would love to have seen a bigger Fumah Lear. I mean even if it’s just a small set can’t GMA 7 make it look big with special camera lenses. And they could have spiced up Fuma’s place with stage smoke. Tonight after all is the big premiere. Totally bland for my taste.
- the Shigi-shigi music is a big let down too. What the heck was that?! I barely heard the shigi-shigi jingle that I like the most. I was waiting for it to be danced by a couple of hundreds of skull faced-big-eyed minions and all I got was less than a handful of unsynchronized-badly-dressed worshippers. Where’s the chanting? Where’s the sexy Amazons? Boo!
- Although Drigo looks like a walking shrimp more make up would have made up for it.
B. What I like.
- you gotta love those little chest hairs on Dennis Trillo the Blue Zaido. Forget about dinner. Hahaha!!!
- I still can’t decide if I like this or not but it did made me laugh a little. Commander Zion reminds me of Commander Baison on Street Fighter.
- This really made me smile up my ears, Paulo Ballesteros looks good playing as Ida. He had the smooth face and even the lady-like voice of the original Filipino-dubbed Shaider. Brings back memories.
Overall, I did not like what I initially saw but I’d still give them a chance though. I am sure they are bound to make some improvements as they read reviews on forums and blogs. I just hope they don’t let down another Kapuso fan, like yours truly.

I wanted to create a separate blog post since I’m thinking comments must be kept short. However, I’m still to create a blog for this. So I’ll just post here a long comment. You can delete it if you want.
Isa lang masasabi ko sa Zaido… AMPANGIT. WALANG KWENTA.
Una ‘yong palolo-lolo nila kay Shaider. Given na hapon si Shaider may ibang klase dapat ng kwento. Obviously iba ang gagawin ni Shaider sa apo n’ya dahil hapon s’ya. Therefore junk ang idea na ‘to. People behind this should’ve had taken advantage only of the opportunity to get added to the list of Toei’s Metal Heroes. They should’ve had created something that is only related to Shaider through that list not in any other way. Then they could’ve had gotten more freedom and a different set of critical aspects.
Next. I waited for the pilot ep of Zaido to give it a try. Akala ko baka masyado ko lang j-in-udge ang palabas dahil gawa nga ‘to ng GMA. Hindi dahil masmadalas ako’ng manood sa ABS-CBN kundi dahil wala talaga ako’ng tiwala sa mga pakulo ng GMA. Pero ano’ng napanood ko, Florante at Laura? Ibong Adarna? That love at first sight between Dennis and Diana is a major let down for me. Kahit na meron nito sa case nina Mio at Takeru ng Maskman, makikita ang malaking pagkakaiba. Umaapaw sa drama. Shows like this CANNOT include MOMS and TEENIE BOPPERS in their target market unless they’re fans of the genre themselves.
Fuuma Lear looks like a big manure that evolved to what he is. I’d say Kokey looks a lot better on that spot. Ida and Drigo, I’d say, look close to the ones before. By the way, did you know Ida is actually a transvestite? [see Wikipedia]. The monster I’m seeing from the teasers–that don’t tease me–looks like that of Alien VS Predator. And as you’ve said M.Bison is there that makes the rip-off factor present.
Lastly, Tokusatsu shows are best released episodic. Every monster in each episode gives the heroes the opportunity to become heroes, and to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses. That’s what those monsters are for. And every episode has very little ‘knowledge’ of the others. In cases when creators need to establish an important point in the story, creators can use arcs.

Well I can cut some slack for the Filipino producers not having good special effects dahil kulang sa funds. Pwede na rin sigurong palampasin na hindi nila masundan yung original story dahil kahit may blessing sila ng Toei, some elements of the story are copyrighted. Ang hindi ko lang matangap ay yung acting. Para akong nanonood ng Ibong Adarna at yung bida ang prinsipe ng Berbanya. Kulang din nang konting ambient sounds para ma-set ang mood. Kung kaya nilang ayusin yung dalawang elements of a good show na sinabi ko, magmemellow down na ang mga rant ng Tokusatsu fans.
To make my comment short, it’s all about “flavor” of the show.

For the clarification of those posseurs, citing TV ratings as the metrics of a TV show’s success over a TV network’s competition, the core topic of this thread is to remind you, about the Japan-import concept of tokusatsu.
Beyond the ratings, the whole gripe of the die-hard fans is not just about TV ratings, it’s about due respect for the culture and spirit of the show from which it’s based on.
When we talk of melding of culture with an entertaiment show, it touches not just the numbers as the bean counters in this thread want to convince us, but the values, culture, history, short of heritage from which the likes of Shaider came from.
The criticism is about the bad, if not the lack of acceptable treatment or taste of a supposedly classic that many among us grew up with.
Sa mga anak ng p**ang nagdudunong-dunungan na di nakaka-intindi ng edukadong english, ang ikinasasama ng loob naming mga nagmamahal at patuloy na nagpapahalaga sa mga aral na nakapaloob sa Shaider, may mga bagay na di nasusukat ng tinatawag na ‘ratings’, ito yung mga bagay na tunay na mahalaga; ano ang value ng dramatic effect na ipinapakita ninyo sa kabuuan ng konsepto ng Shaider?
Marami ang tumutuligsa sa Kokey dahil sa sinasabing ‘mababang’ kalidad ng SFX (special effect para sa mga di nakakaalam, sa mga nagdudunong-dunungan) nito, pero di naman SFX ang pundasyon o sinasandalan ng kwento nito, tungkol ito sa isang bata na nangungulila sa kalinga ng pamilya, di kailangan ng matinding SFX para ipahayag ang sentimyentong ito.
Ang konsepto ng tokusatsu, ayon sa Wikipedia, ay nakasalalay ang pagkakalahad sa paggamit ng SFX at maaksyong tagpo (sa mga nagdududa sa kredibilidad ng Wikipedia, malamang gaya ng ratings, sa hangin rin kayo kumukuha ng mga impormasyon nyo kundi man kayo prostitute ng mga TV networks). Dahil galing ito sa Japan, ‘machismo’ ang highlight nito, hindi drama. Meron mang iyakan o katatawanan, di nito dapat tatabunan o hihigitan ang mga maaksyong eksena, mas madalas kesa hindi, mahigit 60% ng palabas ay puro bakbakan ang masasaksihan.
Sa madaling salita, di pwede ang tatanga-tanga at nagmamarunong sa usapang kaya nilang pasukan ngunit di kayang panindigan.
Walang kwenta ang ratings dito, usapang kultura na kasi ito eh, merong nabuong kultura o pagpapahalaga sa palabas na Shaider na di matutumbasan ng anumang ratings or advertising profit! Ang sinasabi kasi natin dito, dapat irespeto nyo ang alaala ni Shaider. Di nyo pa ba napapansin na maraming nagrereklamo kasi maraming nagmamahal kay Shaider?
Mga walang kaluluwa at walang karapatang magpalabas ng ’sequel’ umano ng Shaider ang hindi magbigay galang sa tinig ng mga tunay na fans ng Shaider. Walang bayarang prostitute na spin doctor, TV network o sinumang nagdudunung-dunungan ang maaaring magsabi sa amin kung paano kami mag-isip at paano kami magsalita at magbigay opinyon dahil ang show na Shaider ang isa sa nagmulat sa amin na lumaban at manindigan sa katotohanan!

Sumasang-ayon ako na hindi talaga drama ang pangunahing tema ng mga ganitong klase ng palabas gaya nga ng sinabi ko na no’ng una. Pero hindi naman machismo ang highlight ng palabas dahil lang galing s’ya sa Japan. Parang anime din ‘yan e, nagkakaiba-iba ng demography o ng inaasahang manonood. Merong shonen, shojo, seinen, josei, etc.Ang tokusatsu ay halos pareho sa mga shonen, ang mga inaasahang manonood karamihan ay mga batang lalaki. Dahil karaniwang hindi mahilig sa drama ang mga batang lalaki, hindi dapat pinupuno ng drama ang ganitong mga palabas. May masmalalim lang sigurong implikasyong panlipunan ang machismo. Halimbawa na lamang na karaniwang hindi mahilig mambabae ang isang pangunahing tauhan ng tokusatsu upang maipakita ang kanyang kakisigan.

Hindi lang sa mga nagsusulat dito sa blog na maka-Zaido ang tinitira ko pati na rin sa mga future na titingin sa page na ito na maka-Zaido. Kung titingnan mo yung lumang version ng Zaido sa Wiki, pinangangalandakan nila ang ratings. Magtataka ka pag tiningnan mo ang page nila ngayon na wala na yung section na yun kahit previously, hindi naman sila sinita ng Wiki (aka, hindi labag sa Wiki policy). Maraming fans ng Zaido ang pinangangalandakan ang ratings na nakuha ng show kumpara sa katapat nila pero hindi importante ang ratings dito kundi sa kalidad ng show. Siguro, maiintindihan mo ang sentimyento naming nagmamahal sa Shaider kung aalamin mo ang core story ng original series. Pag pinagkumpara mo yun sa story at timeline ng Zaido, masasabi mong hindi nga siya compatible sa original Shaider kaya pa’no nila masasabing spin-off ang show nila?

Pero kung titingnan mo ang page ng Zaido sa Wiki, updated na ang page nila at wala na ang page na may ratings (kahit hindi naman sila nasita ng Wiki noon). Ang sinabi ko ay para mabasa ng mga future na magbabasa ng blog na ito.

Just to make myself clear (not angry )I am a Kapuso fan and a Shaider fan but not a Zaido fan. If the latter were true then I would have explicitly made sure to praise Zaido all through out and totally drop the What I hate part. In fact if you would look at my post above I have more negative comments than postive ones.

Ok understandable review, pro Kapuso, pro shaider fan… probably anti Zaido.
There is no ‘pinoy sentai’ or pinoy ‘take’ on sentai, or pinoy ‘take’ on anything, because its pretty much the pinoy teleserya genre ‘repackaged’. See the rest of the kapuso lineups of the past and it has all of their elements, just in a different appearance.
For the record, I’m not pro pinoy-tv-station bias as I hold credit to those who have creative minds. Zaido further proves pinoys need MUCH WORK if they want to get into sci-fi or Tokusatsu elements. We don’t need ‘homages’ (see beam me up zaid) or the space ship that looks like a ghetto version of the star wars x-wing if the story and aesthetics itself is very inconsistent. I don’t have much problems with the actors as they are set back by the creativity of the writing staff, choreography team (I’ve heard many comments about the lackluster fight scenes and stunts) and the overall production.
I can’t say anything positive as its NOT a toku-show. It just took the franchise license for recognition (in fact, I think thats where most of the money was spent), the rest was spent half-assing the rest of production and making sure the ratings system was set to make zaido look ’sucessful’ to the simple-minded pinoy. If really, the only bias I hold is that of the Japanese-toku culture and the standards THEY uphold.

I think many Filipinos are creative and talented but GMA 7 is sadly not hiring them. The network is probably doing the same strategy in getting any type of artist which is basically pirating most of the cast offs of ABS-CBN. If that’s the case then they might have mistakenly pirated the channel two creative team who kept on naming the TV shows very badly. I remember a time when all shows sounded the same having Magandang Umaga Bayan in the morning, Magandang Tanghali Bayan in the afternoon and then Magandang Gabi Bayan in the evening. Ugh…terrible! Kinda like the quality of Zaido now. To whomever it may concern at the GMA network, maybe it is time to fire if not shuffle your team.
